Where are you?
Have you ever asked someone, do you know where you are? Why do you ask this question? You ask, as it appears the person is lost. At times, the person may have no idea where they are, yet they will say, yes, I’m fine. Other times, the person may say, no, do you know how to get to so and so.
Probably a more relatable scenario is when you are in the store, can’t find an item and an employee asks, “can I help you find something?” At times you may say, no thanks, I’m fine, even though you can’t find your items. Other times, you may respond with, yes, do you know where….
When God created Adam and Eve, he stated they could eat anything in the garden except the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Of course, they ate it and after they ate, we read the following.
Genesis 3:8-10
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
God calls out to Adam asking him where he is. That is interesting, for we read the following in the scriptures.
Psalm 139:7-8
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
These scriptures show the omniscience or all knowing power of God. We can’t flee from His presence, for He is everywhere and knows all things. Yet, we find him questioning where Adam was? Did he not know the location of Adam or is there a deeper meaning in the question?
Genesis 4:8-10
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
This is another occurrence where we see God questioning the location of someone when he asks Cain about the whereabouts of his brother Abel. Did God not know?
What God wants, is for us to admit where are in life. He wanted Adam to confess to Him his transgression, his misdeeds. The same is found with Cain, God knew what had happened, but He wanted him to admit where he we was in life.
Even today, God is calling out and asking us where we are. Are we going to make excuse as Adam did or be flippant in our response as Cain? Or, are we going to admit to our God, we have fallen short and need His grace to touch us. We need to restore our relationship with Him.
God’s knows our lost condition, He knows when we are seeking hope in this life, yet cannot locate it. Just as if we were in a store and an employee asks if we need help finding something, so is Jesus asking us if we need help. Are we will to answer that question in humility, admitting we are lost and need His assistance?
Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
